Computer name
- Your computer name must identify your computer on the network. Please
use your name in the computer name. The computer name will not accept
spaces or periods. This helps us identify your computer and contact
you quickly in the event of virus problems or network utilization issues.
Failure to comply with the naming structure can result in disconnection
of your room from the network. This would disable your roommate also
and can result in hard feelings. Please name it correctly. We can help
if you need it. Instructions are here.
Anti-Virus Software required
- You are required to have a current version of anti-virus software.
We have a free anti-virus program available on our web site. It can
only be accessed from on campus so check with the Computer center for
the url. They are also available at Wal-Mart, the bookstore, Hastings,or
online from the major vendors. These usually come with a 1 year subscription
to the definitions that allow the software to identify viruses. You
must keep the definitions current through a subscription to the vendor
service.
Anti Spyware software
- We request that you have some sort of spyware detection software
on your system, prefferably one that will block the spyware from getting
on your system. Spy-Bot or AdAware are both good and free. Spy-Bot
has the ability to block most threats from your computer. You may download
a copy from the network
or
from
their
web
site.
Patches for Windows
- You must keep your computer up to date with the latest patches and
service packs from Microsoft if you run Windows. We recommend Windows
XP Professional or Home and that you activate the automatic Windows
Update feature to keep your system at the latest revision level. Many
of the latest viruses attack the security holes that can be fixed by
applying the latest patches. The computer center staff will be happy
to assist you in setting this up on your system.
