Network Connections
All classrooms, offices, apartments, and dorm rooms have a network connection. One port is provided in each room. If additional computers are required in that room, a hub is required. These are extra cost items and are billed to the user or department. Please contact the computer center if additional ports are required.
IP Addresses
IP addresses are assigned by DHCP from a non-routable pool of private IP addresses. We no longer use a proxy server so please uncheck these options in the browser setup..
DNS Addresses
DNS (Domain Name Service) is used to convert domain names such as www.hputx.edu to IP addresses which are used to access these sites. DNS server addresses are provided by DHCP at the time your system is booted.
Blackboard Information
Blackboard is an on-line learning system to assist you in teaching and learning. It allows professors to post assignments, conduct quizzes and examinations, host online discussion groups, and much more. See the on-line resource page for blackboard here
Wireless Networking (WLAN)
Wireless has arrived in selected areas. See our wireless page for more info. We will support 802.11 b/g in all of these areas. A password (key) is required in most areas to access the network. This is a process that is evolving into what it will become so check back often for new locations and features.
E-mail accounts are assigned to all faculty, staff and students. Faculty and staff login names are usually the first initial and last name. Email addresses are <your login>@hputx.edu. Student login names are the firstname.lastname as in john.doe. E-mail addresses are as above <your login>@hputx.edu. Users are required to check and delete unneccessary e-mail regularly. These e-mail addresses are our official means of communication with you and you must check it. Students may access their email at http://webmail.hputx.edu.
Student Computer Setup
Student computers for use in their dorm rooms must have an ethernet or fast ethernet PC Card. These may be identified as 10/100 ethernet cards. These cards are available from the computer center for several weeks after the start of classes during each long semester. Each card includes a cable to connect to the wall outlet. A limited number of hubs are available, should you need to connect 2 computers in a single room. We ask that no more than 2 computers be connected in any room. To assist us in identifying your computer, you must use your username as the computer name. All student computers must have anti-virus software with an active subscription to virus definition updates. All students should keep their computers updated with the latest manufacturer patches. Microsoft Windows XP and 2000 have auto update features which allow the updates to be installed automatically.
